Since this week is Fire Prevention Week, and October is Fire Safety Awareness month, I thought fire safety might be a good topic to choose for this month's post. Especially given that the statewide fire ban due to drought conditions was just lifted. The question is, what can you do to help prevent a fire in your home or neighborhood? Have working smoke alarms in your home. Did you know having a working smoke alarm in your home decreases chance of death in a house fire by 50%? -Change the batteries in your smoke alarm AT LEAST once a year. -Test your smoke alarm once a month by pressing the "TEST" button. -If you can't afford smoke alarms, come see me. There are plenty of resources available! Be cautious with open flames. -Be sure to put out all open flames (candles, camp fires, etc) before leaving or going to bed. -Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can catch fire. -Keep outside fire pit areas clear of dry leaves and brush. -If burning outside, keep a water source nearby in case of emergencies. Have an escape route. -Have a plan in place in case you ever need it. -If at all possible, have TWO ways out of your home. -Have a designated area to meet up with your family outside the home. Have a fire extinguisher. And know how to use it! Remember: P- Pull the Pin
A- Aim at the base of the fire S- Squeeze the handle S- Sweep the nozzle back and forth
